Cherry Pygmy Basslet (Cypho purpurascens)

Overview

The Cherry Pygmy Basslet is a small but stunning reef fish known for its rich cherry-red to magenta coloration and peaceful temperament. Compact, hardy, and full of personality, this species is ideal for smaller reef aquariums or as a colorful addition to larger marine setups.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef, the Cherry Pygmy Basslet inhabits coral reefs and rocky crevices, where it often shelters among live rock and coral formations.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed once or twice daily for best color and vitality.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful and reef-safe, the Cherry Pygmy Basslet can be kept with a wide range of community fish, including gobies, Wrasses, and clownfish. Avoid keeping multiple basslets in small tanks or housing them with large, aggressive species.

Aggression

Mildly territorial, especially toward similar-looking fish or other small basslets. Providing plenty of rockwork and hiding places helps minimize aggression and allows for natural behavior.

Experience Level

Perfect for beginner to intermediate marine aquarists. Hardy and easy to care for, this species adapts well to aquarium life and is an excellent choice for reef or nano systems.
