Common Ramshorn Snail (Planorbella duryi)
Overview:
The Common Ramshorn Snail is a hardy and popular freshwater snail, recognised for its flat, coiled shell and wide range of natural colours. It is highly valued for its ability to clean algae and consume organic waste, making it a useful addition to planted and community aquariums.
Origin:
Native to North and Central America, Planorbella duryi is commonly found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving freshwater habitats rich in vegetation.
Feeding:
Omnivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, and leftover fish food. Supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach if needed.
Tank Mates:
Compatible with most peaceful fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating species such as puffers and loaches.
Aggression:
Peaceful. Non-aggressive and suitable for community aquariums.
Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Very hardy and easy to maintain.
