Cross River Teugelsi Bichir Polypterus Teugelsi 10cm Overview: The Cross River Teugelsi Bichir, scientifically known as Polypterus teugelsi, is a captivating and prehistoric-looking freshwater fish. Distinguished by its elongated body, numerous dorsal finlets, and snake-like appearance, this species offers a unique aesthetic to any aquarium. They are nocturnal, using their keen sense of smell to navigate and hunt in the dark. Origin: Native to the Cross River basin in Cameroon, West Africa, the Teugelsi Bichir thrives in slow-moving, murky waters. Their natural habitat is rich in vegetation and submerged logs, providing ample hiding spots and hunting grounds. Feeding: Polypterus teugelsi is carnivorous, requiring a diet rich in protein. In captivity, they accept a variety of foods including live, frozen, or freeze-dried foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. Varied diet will ensure optimal health and growth. Tank Mates: When choosing tank mates, select similarly sized species that are not small enough to be considered prey. Ideal companions include large catfish, robust cichlids, and other Polypterus species. Avoid housing with aggressive species that may harass or outcompete them for food. Aggression: Teugelsi Bichirs exhibit low aggression towards fish they cannot eat. However, their predatory nature means smaller fish might be at risk. Ensure tank mates are of compatible size and temperament. Experience Level: Due to their specific care requirements and large adult size, Polypterus teugelsi is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarium hobbyists familiar with maintaining larger, species-specific tanks. Water Parameters:- Temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
- pH: 6.5 to 7.5
