Dot Dash Butterfly Fish – Chaetodon punctatofasciatus
Overview:
The Dot Dash Butterfly Fish is a striking species recognized by its silvery body covered in dotted lines and broken dashes, with a bold black eye bar and a hint of orange along the fins. Its intricate patterning makes it a highly attractive addition to marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, from the Maldives to the Great Barrier Reef.
Feeding:
Omnivorous — accepts a diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine algae, and high-quality pellets. In the wild, it feeds on coral polyps, making it a cautionary choice for reef aquariums.
Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful community fish. Avoid housing with aggressive or overly territorial species.
Aggression:
Generally peaceful, though may show mild territoriality toward other butterflyfish.
Experience Level:
Recommended for intermediate aquarists, as it may be finicky with diet and requires stable water conditions.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
-
