Overview

The Drysdale River Red Tail Rainbow Fish is a striking freshwater species notable for its vibrant red tail, shimmering scales, and active schooling behavior. Its bold colors and energetic swimming make it a standout addition to community aquariums.

Origin

Endemic to the Drysdale River region in northern Western Australia. Found in clear, slow-flowing freshwater streams and rivers with sandy or rocky substrates and dense vegetation.

Feeding

Omnivorous. Accepts a wide range of foods:

• High-quality flakes and pellets

• Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

• Occasional vegetable matter to support coloration

Tank Mates

Peaceful schooling fish best kept in groups of 6 or more. Compatible with:

• Other rainbowfish of similar size

• Small tetras and danios

• Corydoras and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers

Avoid: Aggressive or fin-nipping species that may stress them.

Aggression

Low. Males may display minor territorial behavior during breeding but are generally peaceful.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, thriving in well-maintained freshwater community tanks.

• Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)

• pH: 6.8–7.8

• Hardness: 5–15 dGH

• Notes: Provide open swimming areas with planted or rock hiding spots. Regular water changes help maintain vibrant coloration.
