Earmuff Wrasse (Halichoeres melasmapomus)

Overview

The Earmuff Wrasse is a vibrant and peaceful reef fish named for its distinctive dark markings over the eyes that resemble earmuffs. Displaying a colorful mix of green, yellow, and red along its body, this Wrasse is active, reef-safe, and adds both movement and beauty to mature aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia and the Philippines, Halichoeres melasmapomus inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones, foraging among crevices and sandy patches for small crustaceans and invertebrates.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. It will also graze naturally on live rock microfauna. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include gobies, anthias, tangs, and other non-aggressive Wrasses. Avoid aggressive or overly dominant fish.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though minor territorial behavior may occur toward similar-sized Wrasses in small aquariums. Provide ample rockwork and a sand bed for foraging and resting.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, colorful, and easy to maintain in mature, stable aquariums with proper hiding spots.

• Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

• pH: 8.1 – 8.4

• Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH
