Eyelash Blenny Cirripectes Castaneus

Overview:

The Eyelash Blenny, with its distinctive cirri that resemble eyelashes above its eyes, is a small and colorful addition to any marine aquarium. This species reaches a length of approximately 4 inches and boasts a mottled brown to orange coloration that allows it to blend seamlessly into rocky reefs and coral outcrops.

Origin:

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Eyelash Blenny is typically found in shallow, coral-rich environments. It is adept at navigating the crevices and holes of the reef, making it an exciting species to observe in a home aquarium.

Feeding:

This species is primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of algae. In an aquarium setting, it's important to supplement its diet with high-quality marine algae, spirulina, and prepared foods that are specifically formulated for herbivorous fish. Occasional offerings of meaty foods can be provided, but algae should form the bulk of their diet.

Tank Mates:

Eyelash Blennies are generally peaceful with most other fish but can show territorial aggression towards other blennies, gobies, or fish that invade their perceived territory. Suitable tank mates include small, peaceful fish, and they can also coexist with a variety of invertebrates.

Aggression:

While mostly peaceful, Eyelash Blennies can exhibit aggression towards similar-looking species or those that encroach upon their territory. It's best to house them with dissimilar species to minimize conflicts.

Experience Level:

Intermediate. While not overly demanding, Eyelash Blennies do require a stable, well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Their specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality make them more suited for aquarists with some experience.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-25.5°C)
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 sg
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm
Proper acclimation is crucial for the Eyelash Blenny, as sudden changes in water parameters can be stressful. Regular water changes, stable temperatures, and consistent water quality are key to keeping this species healthy and vibrant.

Summary:

The Eyelash Blenny is a charismatic and somewhat quirky addition to the marine aquarium. Its unique appearance, coupled with its beneficial algae-eating habits, makes it a valuable and interesting inhabitant for intermediate-level aquarists looking to add diversity to their reef tank.
