Devil’s Finger Soft Coral (Sinularia sp.)
Overview:
The Devil’s Finger Soft Coral is a hardy leather coral, instantly recognizable for its thick, finger-like branches that curve and twist in dramatic shapes. When polyps are extended, the colony sways beautifully in the current, adding both movement and bold structure to reef aquariums. It is available in cream, tan, or green tones.
Origin:
Indo-Pacific, commonly found on shallow reef flats and slopes with steady currents.
Feeding:
Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae. While not dependent on direct feeding, it can benefit from occasional supplemental feedings of phytoplankton, marine snow, or microplankton to support growth.
Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and compatible with peaceful fish and invertebrates. Requires spacing from other corals, as it can grow large and release chemicals that may stress neighbors.
Aggression:
Moderate. Does not sting but may engage in chemical warfare (allelopathy). Running activated carbon and maintaining good water flow help reduce effects on nearby corals.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Very hardy and tolerant, making it a popular choice for aquarists of all experience levels. Prefers moderate to high lighting, moderate to strong water flow, and stable water parameters.
