Flowerhorn Cichlid – Chinese Zhen Zhu

Overview:
The Chinese Zhen Zhu Flowerhorn is one of the most famous and enduring Flowerhorn strains, prized for its bright coloration, high-quality pearling, and large kok (nuchal hump). The name Zhen Zhu means pearl in Chinese, and this variety lives up to its reputation with shimmering pearling that often extends across the entire body and fins. It is considered a classic Flowerhorn lineage, and many modern strains are descended from or influenced by Zhen Zhu genetics.

Origin:
Originally developed in China, the Zhen Zhu line became a foundational strain in the Flowerhorn breeding world, influencing several other modern varieties.

Feeding:

• Staple diet: Premium Flowerhorn pellets that enhance kok growth and pearling.

• Supplements: Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, krill, and shrimp to intensify color and vitality.

• Feeding tip: Provide controlled portions 2–3 times daily to maintain health and water quality.

Tank Mates:
Best kept alone due to high aggression. May be housed with other large, robust cichlids if provided with a spacious tank and clear territories.

Aggression:
Highly aggressive and territorial. The Zhen Zhu will not tolerate smaller or peaceful fish and often dominates any shared tank environment.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. While hardy and adaptable, this fish requires large aquariums, strong filtration, and consistent maintenance to thrive.

• pH: 7.4–8.0

• Hardness: 8–20 dGH

• Minimum Tank Size: 75+ gallons for a single specimen
