Flowerhorn Cichlid – Super Red Dragon (SRD)

Overview:
The Super Red Dragon (SRD) is one of the most iconic and popular Flowerhorn strains worldwide. It is famous for its intense deep red coloration, prominent kok (nuchal hump), and heavy pearling. Many enthusiasts consider it the benchmark strain when discussing Flowerhorns because of its bold look, hardiness, and personality.

Origin:
Selective breeding in Thailand and Malaysia during the early 2000s, where the red gene lines from Luohan and Red Devil cichlids were enhanced to produce the fiery crimson colors.

Feeding:

• Staple Diet: High-quality Flowerhorn pellets (growth and color-enhancing formulas).

• Boosters: Freeze-dried krill, shrimp, and bloodworms for kok growth and color intensity.

• Supplements: Spirulina or carotenoid-rich foods to maintain the bright red hue.

Tank Mates:

• Best kept alone due to extreme aggression.

• If tank mates are attempted, only very large tanks with equally aggressive species (not recommended for long-term success).

Aggression Level:
Very High. Territorial and dominant; known for “glass surfing” and interacting with keepers.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Recommended for aquarists with prior cichlid or aggressive fish-keeping experience.

Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)

• pH: 7.2–8.0

• Hardness: 8–20 dGH

• Minimum Tank Size: 75–100 gallons+ for a single adult SRD.

Unique Features:

• Coloration: Deep solid red body with occasional orange undertones; minimal fading compared to Golden Base lines.

• Pearling: Heavy white or blue pearling that runs across the body, enhancing the dragon-like effect.

• Head (Kok): Large, rounded hump (often Malau style), which is a prized trait.

• Body Shape: Muscular frame with flowing fins and strong jawline.

• Rarity: One of the most widespread and recognizable Flowerhorns, often used in competitions.
