Flowerhorn Cichlid – Vietnamese Strain

Overview:
The Vietnamese Flowerhorn is a highly regarded strain known for its balanced body structure, prominent kok (head hump), and strong coloration. Breeders in Vietnam have refined this line to emphasize symmetry, pearling, and kok size, making it a favorite among hobbyists and show competitors. While it shares some ancestry with the Zhen Zhu (Pearl) lineage, the Vietnamese strain is distinct in its more compact body shape and intense patterning.

Origin:
Selective breeding programs in Vietnam, derived from crossbreeding Zhen Zhu, Kamfa, and other established Flowerhorn strains.

Feeding:

• Staple diet: Premium Flowerhorn pellets formulated for kok development and color.

• Enhancements: Krill, bloodworms, and shrimp to enrich red tones and maintain growth.

• Feeding schedule: Small portions 2–3 times daily for best coloration and kok health.

Tank Mates:
Best kept solo. If housed with others, only in very large tanks with equally dominant fish.

Aggression:
Extremely aggressive and territorial. True to Flowerhorn temperament, Vietnamese strains are best kept in species-only aquariums.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Their size, aggression, and water quality demands make them a challenge but very rewarding for dedicated keepers.

• Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)

• pH: 7.4–8.0

• Hardness: 8–20 dGH

• Minimum Tank Size: 75+ gallons for a single adult
