Overview:
The Geophagus sp. “Alto Sinu” is a stunning and relatively rare eartheater species collected from Colombia’s Sinú River basin. It is prized for its shimmering golden-beige body, subtle iridescent green and blue facial markings, and flowing fin extensions accented with red and orange tones. Like other eartheaters, it exhibits the captivating behavior of sifting sand through its gills in search of food, making it both beautiful and fascinating to watch.
Origin:
Endemic to the Alto Sinú region in northern Colombia, where it inhabits slow-moving, sandy-bottom rivers with warm, clear water and scattered leaf litter.
Feeding:
Omnivorous. In the aquarium, they thrive on sinking cichlid pellets, high-quality frozen foods (such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp), and occasional vegetable matter or spirulina-based foods. Fine sand substrate is essential to allow their natural sifting behavior.
Tank Mates:
Peaceful for a cichlid, making them suitable for other Geophagus species, peaceful South American cichlids, larger tetras, Corydoras, plecos, and other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid keeping with aggressive or highly territorial species.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
Soft to moderately hard water
-
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons for a small group
-
Provide open sandy areas for foraging and driftwood or rocks for cover
Behavior & Personality:
-
Best kept in groups of 5 or more to spread out mild intraspecies aggression
-
Active forager—constantly turning over sand and helping keep the substrate clean
-
Displays enhanced coloration during breeding and social interactions
Special Notes:
-
Rarely available in the aquarium trade—highly sought after by eartheater enthusiasts
-
Requires excellent water quality and stable conditions for long-term health
-
May uproot delicate plants during foraging—use hardy, rooted, or potted plants
-
Will readily spawn in aquariums with proper conditions
