Overview:
The Geophagus argyrostictus is a graceful South American cichlid admired for its body sprinkled with fine shimmering spots and accented by subtle red and blue highlights on the fins. Like other eartheaters, it spends much of its time gently sifting through the substrate for food, adding both activity and natural foraging behavior to the aquarium. Its peaceful temperament makes it a great choice for community cichlid setups.
Origin:
Native to slow-moving rivers and floodplain lakes in the Amazon Basin, particularly in Brazil and surrounding regions. Found in soft, sandy-bottom habitats with warm, tannin-stained waters.
Feeding:
Omnivorous with a preference for small invertebrates. Provide a varied diet of sinking cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, and occasional vegetable matter like spirulina-based flakes. Sand substrate is recommended to allow natural sifting behavior.
Tank Mates:
Peaceful for a cichlid, making it compatible with other Geophagus species, peaceful South American cichlids, Corydoras, larger tetras, and plecos. Avoid highly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
-
pH: 6.0–7.2
-
Soft to moderately hard water
-

-
Shows best color when settled and kept in a well-structured aquascape
Special Notes:

-
Ideal for South American biotope tanks with driftwood, leaf litter, and gentle filtration

-
Will dig while foraging—secure plants or use hardscape
