Giant Raphael Catfish Megalodoras Uranoscopus 10cm Overview: The Giant Raphael Catfish, scientifically known as Megalodoras uranoscopus, is an impressive and robust species known for its large size and armored body. Growing up to 20 inches (50 cm) in length, this catfish is a peaceful bottom-dweller that adds a sense of grandeur to any large aquarium. Its tough, ridged body and nocturnal habits make it both a fascinating and durable addition to the tank. Origin: Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, the Giant Raphael Catfish thrives in environments with dense vegetation and plenty of hiding spots. Feeding: The Giant Raphael Catfish is an omnivore that primarily feeds on a variety of sinking foods. It enjoys a diet of high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and live or frozen foods like earthworms, shrimp, and small fish. It will also scavenge uneaten food from the tank bottom, making it an effective cleanup crew member. Tank Mates: Due to its large size and peaceful nature, the Giant Raphael Catfish can be kept with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tank mates include larger cichlids, plecos, and other robust catfish species. Avoid keeping them with much smaller fish that might be seen as food. Aggression: The Giant Raphael Catfish is generally peaceful and non-aggressive, but it can be territorial towards other bottom-dwelling species. It’s best to provide ample space and hiding spots to minimize territorial disputes. Experience Level: Intermediate. While the Giant Raphael Catfish is hardy and relatively easy to care for, its large size and specific tank requirements make it more suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining large tanks. Water Parameters: The ideal water conditions for the Giant Raphael Catfish include a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. A spacious tank with a minimum size of 100 gallons is recommended, equipped with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rocks. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are crucial to maintain water quality. In summary, the Giant Raphael Catfish is a large, peaceful, and durable bottom-dweller that can thrive in a well-maintained aquarium. Its impressive size and armored appearance make it an intriguing choice for aquarists with the space and experience to care for it properly.
