Granite Limbata Snakehead (Channa limbata)

Overview

The Granite Limbata Snakehead is a striking predatory freshwater fish known for its robust body, distinctive granite-like patterning, and impressive hunting abilities. A fascinating species for experienced aquarists, it grows relatively large and displays active, bold behavior.

Origin

Native to Myanmar and parts of northeastern India, inhabiting slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains with dense vegetation and hiding spots.

Feeding

Carnivorous and highly predatory. Accepts:

• Live fish

• Frozen or fresh meaty foods such as shrimp, worms, or small fish

• Occasionally high-protein pellets formulated for carnivorous species

Tank Mates

Best kept in a species-only tank due to its predatory nature. Compatible only with:

• Larger, robust fish that can cohabit safely (rarely recommended)

Avoid: Small or medium-sized fish—they will be considered prey.

Aggression

High. Territorial and aggressive, particularly toward conspecifics or similarly sized fish. Requires careful monitoring if housed with other large species.

Experience Level

Advanced. Requires large aquariums, secure lids, and careful diet management. Not suitable for beginner keepers.

• Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)

• pH: 6.5–7.5

• Hardness: 5–12 dGH

• Tank Setup:

  • Large, well-planted tank with open swimming areas

  • Plenty of hiding spots (rocks, driftwood, caves)

  • Secure lid—excellent jumpers
