Hair Thorn Nerite Snail (Neritina sp.)

Overview

The Hair Thorn Nerite Snail is a unique and attractive Nerite variety recognised by its dark shell often adorned with thin, thorn-like or bristle-patterned markings. Highly efficient at algae removal, it is prized for keeping glass, rocks, and plants clean without harming live plants or overpopulating.

Origin

Found across Southeast Asia in freshwater and mildly brackish habitats such as rivers, streams, and mangrove edges.

Feeding

An exceptional algae grazer that naturally consumes:

• Soft film algae

• Diatoms

• Green spot algae

• Biofilm

Supplement lightly with algae wafers or blanched vegetables in very clean tanks.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and suitable for most community aquariums, including:

• Tetras, rasboras, danios

• Peaceful gouramis

• Corydoras & other small catfish

• Shrimp

• Other non-aggressive snails

Avoid: Loaches, puffers, large cichlids, or any snail-eating species.

Aggression

Zero aggression. Completely peaceful and plant-safe.

Experience Level

Great for beginners—tough, easy to care for, and low maintenance.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

• pH: 7.2–8.5

• Hardness: 8–20 dGH

• Notes:

  • Needs alkaline, mineral-rich water for shell health.

  • Will not reproduce in freshwater (eggs require brackish conditions).

  • Very strong climbers—use a secure lid.
