Overview:
The Horse Hoof Clam is a unique and robust species of giant clam, named for its distinctive rounded, heavy shell that resembles a horse’s hoof. Known for its earthy tones and beautifully patterned mantle, this clam brings a natural, exotic touch to large reef aquariums. Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the Philippines, Indonesia, and northern Australia, Hippopus hippopus inhabits sandy reef flats and lagoons, often partially buried in substrate. Feeding:
Primarily photosynthetic, this clam hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae and thrives under strong reef lighting. Supplement with phytoplankton and microplankton, especially in younger clams or systems with lower nutrient availability. Tank Mates:
Peaceful and reef-safe, the Horse Hoof Clam is best kept with non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with species that may nip at its mantle, such as angelfish or some Wrasses. Water Parameters: Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C) pH: 8.1–8.4 Salinity: 1.023–1.025 SG Calcium: 400–450 ppm Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Lighting: High-intensity reef lighting (LED or metal halide) Note: Due to its size and substrate-burrowing behavior, the Horse Hoof Clam is best suited for large, mature reef tanks with stable water chemistry and ample space on the sand bed. Add an impressive and uncommon invertebrate to your reef with the Horse Hoof Clam—an elegant, living filter that offers both function and beauty.Above images for illustration purposes only.
