What is Hugo Kamishi Akadama?
Hugo Kamishi Akadama is a nutritious substrate designed for planted aquariums. It is made from volcanic clay and lowers both the pH and KH of your water. This small grained version has particles ranging in size from 1-4mm.
What are the benefits of this planting substrate?
This kind of substrate has been used by expert bonsai growers for years, known for its plant-boosting properties. It's now popular in the aquascaping hobby and is great for promoting lush and healthy plant growth.
It's porous too, so it provides fantastic water circulation in your aquarium. This makes it a great breeding ground for beneficial bacteria that help to break down toxic compounds like ammonia and nitrite in your water column. This small grained variety also helps delicately rooted plants grip into the substrate.
How do I use Hugo Kamishi Akadama?
Hugo Kamishi Akadama is best used as a base layer in a new planted aquarium. It's recommended that you top this base layer of Hugo Kamishi Akadama with a secondary layer of gravel/sand. This will seal the base layer and ensure that excess nutrients don't escape into your water column. Over time, the roots of your plants will work their way down to the nutritious Hugo Kamishi Akadama base layer.
This small grained variety of Hugo Kamishi Akadama is available in two sizes to suit your needs: a 4L bag and an 8L bag. For a quality planting substrate with a larger average grain size, check out Hugo Kamishi Akadama Medium Grain 2-10mm.
