This species is a member of the family Muraenidae and is highly prized by aquarium enthusiasts for its beauty and interesting behavior. Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Flavimarginatus eel can be found in coral reefs, rocky crevices, and caves. Its range includes the waters of Indonesia, the Philippines, and parts of the Pacific Ocean. This species is typically found in shallow waters at depths of up to 50 meters, where it seeks shelter in cracks and crevices. Feeding: The Flavimarginatus eel is carnivorous and primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. In captivity, it will readily accept a diet of frozen or live food, such as shrimp, squid, and small fish. Regular feeding is essential for its health, as it has a fast metabolism. It is important to provide a varied diet to ensure nutritional balance. Tank Mates: Due to its carnivorous nature, the Flavimarginatus eel should be housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid keeping it with small or slow-moving fish, as it may view them as potential prey. Suitable companions include other larger, peaceful species, such as tangs, angelfish, and some Wrasse. It is best kept in a species-specific tank or with other eels that have compatible temperaments. Aggression: The Flavimarginatus eel is generally peaceful but can show some territorial behavior, especially if other eels or fish invade its space. While not overly aggressive, it can become defensive if it feels threatened, so proper tank setup with ample hiding spaces is crucial. It is also known to exhibit some degree of shyness, often retreating to its hiding spot when disturbed. Experience Level: This eel is recommended for experienced aquarists due to its specific care requirements, such as appropriate tank size, water conditions, and feeding needs. It thrives in larger, well-maintained aquariums with a variety of hiding places. First-time eel owners may find it challenging to meet the needs of this species, making it more suitable for hobbyists with experience in maintaining marine setups. Water Parameters: The Flavimarginatus eel requires stable water conditions to thrive. Ideal water parameters include: Temperature: 24°C - 28°C (75°F - 82°F) Salinity: 1.020 - 1.025 (specific gravity) pH: 8.1 - 8.4 Ammonia/Nitrites: 0 ppm Nitrates: <20 ppm (lower levels preferred) Water Flow: Moderate to strong current is acceptable, but not too strong to disturb its resting places. Proper filtration, regular water changes, and monitoring of water quality are crucial for its health.
