Overview:

The Longfin Batfish, also known as the Teira Batfish or Round-faced Batfish, is a striking marine species recognized for its elegant, elongated fins and distinctive, disc-like body. This peaceful fish adds a touch of grace to any large saltwater aquarium, displaying an array of colors from silver to black with potential hints of yellow around the fins. They can grow quite large, reaching up to 24 inches in a spacious tank, making them a captivating centerpiece for aquatic enthusiasts.

Origin:

Native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, and as far north as the Ryukyu Islands. They often inhabit lagoons and reefs, adapting well to a variety of marine environments.

Feeding:

Longfin Batfish are omnivores with a preference for meaty foods and algae. A balanced diet should include marine algae, high-quality frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, and marine flake food. Feeding should be done twice a day in small amounts to prevent overfeeding.

Tank Mates:

Ideal tank mates include other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish of a similar size. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates, as they may be mistaken for food. Compatible with most community reef tanks, though they may nip at some soft corals and clams when not adequately fed.

Aggression:

This species is generally peaceful and tends to keep to itself or with other batfish. It’s important to provide plenty of space for them to swim and thrive without competition for food or territory.

Experience Level:

Due to their size and specific care requirements, Longfin Batfish are recommended for intermediate to experienced aquarists. An understanding of their dietary needs and ample tank space is crucial for their well-being.

• pH: 8.1-8.4
• Salinity: 1.020-1.025 sg
• Tank Size: Minimum of 180 gallons (681 liters) for one, with added space for each additional batfish.
