Banded Mantis Shrimp (Lysiosquillina maculata)
Overview:
The Banded Mantis Shrimp is a large, predatory crustacean known for its elongated body, striking banded pattern, and powerful spear-like claws. It is an impressive and highly active hunter, best suited for experienced marine aquarists with secure, mature systems.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found in sandy or rubble substrates near coral reefs, often occupying deep burrows.
Feeding:
Carnivorous. Feeds on live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, shrimp, crabs, and mollusks. Requires a varied diet to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Mates:
Not suitable for most community tanks. Highly aggressive and territorial; will attack or consume other fish and invertebrates. Best kept alone in a species-specific tank.
Aggression:
Extremely aggressive and territorial. Capable of inflicting serious damage to tank mates and aquarium structures.
Experience Level:
Advanced. Requires a large, secure aquarium with deep sand beds or burrow areas, stable water parameters, and reinforced walls to prevent escapes.
