Matsuba Butterfly Japanese Koi Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Overview:
The Matsuba Butterfly Japanese Koi is a beautifully patterned ornamental koi featuring a base color overlaid with distinctive net-like markings on its scales, complemented by long, flowing butterfly fins. Its intricate patterning and graceful movement make it a standout addition to any premium pond.

Origin:
Originating from Japan, the Matsuba variety is prized for its unique reticulated “pinecone” scale pattern and traditional elegance. The butterfly-fin form enhances its fluidity and showcases the koi’s detailed markings.

Feeding:
Omnivorous. Feed high-quality, color-enhancing koi pellets as a staple, supplemented with vegetables, shrimp, or seasonal treats. Feed 1–2 times daily during warmer months.

Tank / Pond Mates:
Peaceful and social. Best kept with other koi or calm, similarly sized pond fish such as goldfish.

Temperament / Aggression:
Very peaceful and non-aggressive, ideal for mixed koi ponds.

Experience Level:
Beginner to advanced. Hardy and adaptable, though maintaining optimal water quality and adequate pond space is essential for preserving coloration and overall health.

• pH: 6.5–8.5

• Water Type: Freshwater

• Minimum Pond Size: 1,000+ gallons recommended
