Mickey Mouse Marlboro Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)

Overview

The Mickey Mouse Marlboro Platy is a vibrant and hardy freshwater livebearer, named for the distinctive black “Mickey Mouse” marking near its tail. With bright red-orange body coloration and striking patterns, this platy adds color and activity to community aquariums.

Origin

A selectively bred variety of the common platy, originally derived from Central America. Adapted to aquarium life and widely available in the hobby.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed:

• High-quality flakes or pellets

• Frozen or live foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, or brine shrimp

• Occasional vegetable matter (blanched spinach, zucchini, or algae wafers)

Tank Mates

Peaceful and ideal for community tanks. Compatible with:

• Other livebearers (mollies, swordtails, platies)

• Tetras, rasboras, and danios

• Corydoras and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers

Avoid: Aggressive or overly large species that may harass them.

Aggression

Low. Generally peaceful, but males may occasionally nudge each other during breeding.

Experience Level

Beginner. Extremely hardy, adaptable, and easy to care for, making it ideal for novice aquarists.

• Temperature: 70–78°F (21–26°C)

• pH: 7.0–8.0

• Hardness: 10–20 dGH

• Notes: Provide plants and hiding spots to encourage natural behavior. Regular water changes keep colors bright and fish healthy.
