Moorish Idol Zanclus Cornutus Overview: The Moorish Idol, with its distinct black, white, and yellow bands, and long, trailing dorsal fin, is a captivating and iconic saltwater fish that can bring a dynamic aesthetic to any marine aquarium. Often mistaken for a species of angelfish, the Moorish Idol is in fact the sole member of the Zanclidae family, making it a unique addition to the aquatic community. Origin: Native to the clear, warm waters of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to the Hawaiian Islands, Moorish Idols are commonly found in shallow reefs. They prefer environments with plenty of live rock formations and coral for grazing. Feeding: Moorish Idols are omnivorous, requiring a varied diet to stay healthy. In the aquarium, they should be fed a mix of marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. They are known for being finicky eaters, so patience and variety are key to ensuring their dietary needs are met. Tank Mates: Selecting tank mates for Moorish Idols should be done with care, as they can be shy and easily outcompeted for food. Suitable companions include peaceful fish such as clownfish, damselfish, and certain species of gobies and blennies. It is crucial to avoid aggressive or overly territorial fish that could stress or harm the Moorish Idol. Aggression: Generally peaceful, Moorish Idols exhibit little aggression towards other fish. However, they can become territorial with members of their own species, so it is typically recommended to keep them singly unless the aquarium is large enough to support multiple individuals with ample space. Experience Level: Due to their specific care requirements and sensitivity to water quality, Moorish Idols are best suited for the experienced aquarist. They require a stable, well-established marine aquarium with excellent water quality and a mature biological filter. Water Parameters:- Temperature: 72-78°F (22-25.5°C)
