Nassarius Snail (Nassarius sp.)
Overview
The Nassarius Snail is a small but highly effective scavenger known for its burrowing behavior and distinctive long siphon. Often hiding beneath the sand, it quickly emerges at feeding time, helping to aerate the substrate and clean up uneaten food before it can decay — an essential member of any reef or marine cleanup crew.
Origin
Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions, Nassarius species are commonly found in sandy coastal areas and shallow reef flats.
Feeding
Carnivorous scavenger that feeds on leftover meaty foods, detritus, and decaying organic matter. Supplement with small pieces of shrimp, fish, or sinking marine pellets as needed.
Tank Mates
Completely reef-safe and peaceful. Ideal with other snails, shrimp, and reef-safe fish. Avoid keeping with snail-eating species such as puffers or certain Wrasses.
Aggression
Peaceful. Does not harm corals or other invertebrates, but may feed on carrion.
Experience Level
Perfect for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Hardy, adaptable, and very low maintenance, as long as a sandy substrate is provided for burrowing.
