Peppermint Hogfish (Bodianus opercularis)

Overview

The Peppermint Hogfish is a beautifully patterned reef species featuring vivid red and white stripes and a lively, curious personality. Small, hardy, and full of charm, this eye-catching fish is perfect for adding color and activity to medium-sized marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from the Maldives and Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef—the Peppermint Hogfish inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons, where it forages among rocks and crevices for small invertebrates.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet marine diets. Feed small portions two to three times daily to keep it healthy and vibrant.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful with other semi-aggressive or similarly sized fish. Ideal companions include Wrasses, tangs, gobies, and angelfish. It may consume very small crustaceans, so ornamental shrimp should be avoided.

Aggression

Mildly territorial, especially toward similar-looking species or other hogfish. Providing ample rockwork and hiding spaces helps reduce aggression and allows for natural behavior.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate marine aquarists. The Peppermint Hogfish is hardy, easy to feed, and adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions, making it a great choice for both reef and fish-only systems.
