Pinktail Trigger – Melichthys vidua
Overview:
The Pinktail Trigger is a striking marine fish, easily recognized by its deep black or dark gray body contrasted with a vivid pink or purple tail. Its bold coloration and active swimming make it a dramatic addition to large reef or mixed-species marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, commonly found around coral reefs and lagoons from East Africa to the central Pacific.
Feeding:
Omnivorous – thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and crustaceans, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Regular feeding supports vibrant coloration and overall health.
Tank Mates:
Suitable with peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates. Avoid very small or timid species, as the Pinktail Trigger can display mild territorial behavior.
Aggression:
Moderately territorial – generally less aggressive than larger triggerfish species but may defend its space in smaller tanks.
Experience Level:
Intermediate aquarists – requires a mature, well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and adequate swimming space.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
