Rainbow Shiner (Hydrophlox chrosomus)
Overview
The Rainbow Shiner is one of the most colourful freshwater minnows available, famous for its stunning iridescent blues, purples, and pinks—especially vibrant during breeding. Active, peaceful, and full of motion, it makes a spectacular addition to temperate community aquariums.
Origin
Native to the southeastern United States, typically found in clear, cool, fast-flowing streams and creeks with rocky or gravel bottoms.
Feeding
Omnivorous and easy to feed. Accepts flakes, small pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia), and live foods. Supplementing with high-quality colour-enhancing foods helps maintain peak coloration.
Tank Mates
Peaceful schooling fish. Best kept with other non-aggressive temperate species such as other shiners, danios, white cloud minnows, or small barbs. Avoid large or predatory fish.
Aggression
Very low aggression. Displays only mild chasing within its school. Keep in groups of 6+ for natural behaviour and colouration.
Experience Level
Suitable for beginners and intermediate keepers. Hardy and adaptable, though prefers well-oxygenated, clean water with steady flow.
