Red Carpet Anemone – Stichodactyla haddoni
Overview:
The Red Carpet Anemone is one of the most striking and sought-after anemones, showcasing a rich, vibrant red coloration and dense, carpet-like tentacles. Its dramatic appearance and ability to host clownfish make it a show-stopping centerpiece in large reef aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found on sandy bottoms and shallow reef flats.
Feeding:
Carnivorous – thrives on meaty marine foods such as silversides, shrimp, chopped fish, and frozen preparations, while also receiving nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae under strong lighting.
Tank Mates:
Ideal with clownfish and peaceful reef-safe fish. Avoid housing near corals or delicate invertebrates, as its sting is powerful and can cause damage.
Aggression:
Highly territorial – has a potent sting capable of harming corals and small fish. Needs space within the aquarium.
Experience Level:
Advanced aquarists only – requires a stable, mature system, strong reef lighting, moderate flow, and sandy substrate for anchoring.
