Red Lionfish Pterois Volitans The Red Lionfish, also known as Pterois Volitans, is a captivating marine fish with a charming personality. As juveniles, they are active swimmers and constantly seek out food. These lionfish are pollution tolerant and are forgiving of aquarist's negligence, making them hardy and adaptable to home aquariums1.

Origin

Native to warm, tropical waters of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Red Lionfish is an active swimmer and prefers open waters during both day and night. In the wild, they are found in areas with rocky environments in subtropical and tropical waters1.

Feeding Habits

In the wild, lionfish feed on smaller fish and invertebrates. However, in a home aquarium, they readily accept prepared food such as shrimp or fish chunks. They are aggressive feeders and will actively compete with other fast swimming fish1.

Suitable Tank Mates

It's important to keep in mind that Red Lionfish tend to consume tank mates that are half their body size or smaller. Therefore, suitable tank mates should be significantly larger than the lionfish to avoid being eaten1.
