Sailfin Red Hook Dollar Myleus Setiger 4cm Overview: The Sailfin Red Hook Dollar, scientifically known as Myleus setiger, is a large, disc-shaped fish known for its striking red tail and long, flowing dorsal fin. This species is a member of the characin family and is popular for its unique appearance and graceful swimming behavior. Due to its size and schooling nature, it is best suited for large community aquariums. Origin: Native to the rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in South America, the Sailfin Red Hook Dollar thrives in freshwater environments with dense vegetation and plenty of open swimming space. In the wild, they are often found in slow-moving or still waters, where they feed on plant material and small invertebrates. Feeding: Sailfin Red Hook Dollars are omnivorous with a preference for a plant-based diet. They should be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality vegetable-based flakes or pellets, supplemented with fresh vegetables like spinach, zucchini, and peas. They will also accept live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small insects. Tank Mates: These peaceful and social fish do best in groups of five or more. They are compatible with other large, peaceful species such as other characins, larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and catfish like plecos. Avoid keeping them with very small fish, as they might be mistaken for food. Aggression: Sailfin Red Hook Dollars are generally peaceful and do well in community tanks. They can be shy when kept alone, so maintaining a group is important for their well-being. They are not aggressive but may show some territorial behavior during feeding. Experience Level: Intermediate. While the Sailfin Red Hook Dollar is hardy and adaptable, its large size and need for a spacious tank make it more suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining large freshwater setups. Water Parameters: To keep Sailfin Red Hook Dollars healthy, maintain water temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (5-15 dGH). They require a large tank (at least 100 gallons) with plenty of swimming space, gentle water flow, and good filtration to handle their size and bioload. In summary, the Sailfin Red Hook Dollar is a stunning and peaceful addition to a large community tank. Its unique appearance, graceful movement, and manageable care requirements make it an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists looking to create a dynamic and visually appealing aquarium.Above images for illustration purposes only.
