Red Lima Scallop (Lima orientalis)
Overview
The Red Lima Scallop is a visually striking bivalve with bright red, fan-shaped shells and delicate, fringed mantle edges. Known for its slow, graceful movement across rocks or sand, it adds color, texture, and interest to reef and marine aquariums.
Origin
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Lima orientalis inhabits coral reefs, rocky substrates, and sandy lagoon areas, often partially buried or attached to hard surfaces.
Feeding
A filter feeder that requires suspended plankton, phytoplankton, and other fine particulate foods. Regular feeding is necessary to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Mates
Completely reef-safe and peaceful. Compatible with non-aggressive fish, invertebrates, and other sessile animals. Avoid predatory fish or crabs that may harm or disturb the scallop.
Aggression
Peaceful. Does not compete with corals or other invertebrates for space.
Experience Level
Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists due to specialized feeding requirements and sensitivity to water quality. Requires stable, mature tanks with moderate water flow.
