Overview:
The Sicklefin Barb is a sleek and shimmering freshwater fish known for its distinctively long, curved dorsal fin—hence the name "sicklefin." With its streamlined silver body, subtle patterning, and active schooling behavior, Puntioplites falcifer makes a dynamic and visually striking addition to larger community aquariums or Southeast Asian biotope setups.

Origin:
Native to slow to moderately flowing rivers and floodplains in Southeast Asia, especially in countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Feeding:
Omnivorous and easy to care for. Accepts a wide range of foods, including high-quality flake or pellet food, along with vegetable matter and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp. A varied diet enhances health and natural coloration.

Tank Mates:
Peaceful and best kept in groups of 5 or more to promote natural schooling and reduce stress. Compatible with other large, peaceful fish such as bala sharks, tinfoil barbs, rainbowfish, loaches, and large gouramis. Avoid small or delicate species that may be outcompeted or intimidated by their size and activity.

Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

• pH: 6.5–7.5

• Soft to moderately hard water

• Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons

• Provide ample open swimming space with some planted or shaded areas

Behavior & Personality:

• Very active, fast-swimming schooling fish

• Peaceful, though can be boisterous—ideal for larger community tanks

• Adds constant motion and life to mid-to-upper tank levels

Special Notes:

• Can grow to 8–10 inches (20–25 cm)—suitable only for large aquariums

• Needs strong filtration and good oxygenation

• Not commonly available—a great choice for aquarists seeking something unique

• Stunning in schools under good lighting with a gentle current
