South American Lungfish Lepidosiren Paradoxus 20cm Overview: The South American Lungfish, also known as Lepidosiren paradoxus, is a fascinating and unique freshwater species. This lungfish has an elongated body, small pectoral fins, and a distinct dorsal fin that runs along most of its back. Capable of breathing air due to its lung-like swim bladder, this species is well-adapted to environments with low oxygen levels. Origin: Native to the slow-moving, swampy waters of the Amazon, Paraguay, and lower Paraná basins in South America, the South American Lungfish has evolved remarkable adaptations to survive in these environments, including the ability to aestivate in mud during dry seasons. Feeding: Lepidosiren paradoxus is an omnivore with a preference for a carnivorous diet. In captivity, they accept a variety of foods including worms, small fish, and shrimp, as well as some plant-based foods. It's essential to ensure a balanced diet for their health and well-being. Tank Mates: Due to their size and feeding habits, tank mates should be chosen with care. Ideal companions are peaceful, similarly sized fish that do not compete aggressively for food. Smaller fish may be seen as prey. Aggression: Generally, the South American Lungfish is docile towards larger tank mates but can show aggression towards smaller species that it might consider prey. It's crucial to monitor their interactions in a community tank setting. Experience Level: This species is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarium hobbyists, given their specific care requirements, potential size, and the need for a specialized diet. Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F)
  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5
  • Hardness: 5 to 12 dGH
  • It's vital to provide a well-oxygenated environment with clean, stable water conditions. A tight-fitting lid is also necessary to prevent escapes, as lungfish are known to be skilled at finding their way out of aquariums.
The South American Lungfish is a remarkable addition to any large, well-maintained aquarium, offering a glimpse into the evolutionary adaptations of ancient fish species. Their unique behavior and care requirements make them a fascinating subject for dedicated aquarists.
