Spanish / Iberian Ribbed Newt (Pleurodeles waltl)

Overview

The Spanish or Iberian Ribbed Newt is a fascinating fully aquatic amphibian known for its elongated body and small rib tips that can protrude when threatened. Hardy and long-lived, this species is ideal for amphibian enthusiasts interested in a unique and interactive freshwater inhabitant.

Origin

Native to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and parts of Morocco, inhabiting cool ponds, lakes, and slow-moving freshwater bodies with dense vegetation.

Feeding

Carnivorous. Accepts a variety of protein-rich foods such as:

• Bloodworms

• Earthworms

• Insect larvae

• Sinking amphibian or carnivore pellets

• Small strips of fish or prawn

A varied diet promotes health and natural coloration.

Tank Mates

Best kept in a species-only tank. If added to community setups, only very peaceful, small, cold-water fish are suitable.

Avoid: Large fish, fin-nippers, aggressive species, and crustaceans.

Aggression

Generally peaceful but may eat very small fish or invertebrates. Territorial displays are minimal.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Very hardy, but requires cool, clean, well-oxygenated water and secure housing.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 60–72°F (15–22°C)

• pH: 6.8–7.8

• Hardness: 4–15 dGH

• Tank Setup:

  • Fully aquatic environment

  • Soft substrate or bare bottom

  • Plenty of hiding places (caves, PVC tubes)

  • Tight-fitting lid to prevent escapes
