Spikey Starfish (Gomophia sp.)
Overview:
The Spikey Starfish is a striking echinoderm recognized for its knobby, spiked arms and bold coloration. Hardy and unusual, it brings both function and visual appeal to larger marine aquariums.
Origin:
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, typically inhabiting reef flats and rocky substrates.
Feeding:
Omnivorous scavenger. Feeds on detritus, biofilm, sponges, and small invertebrates. May require supplemental feeding with chopped seafood, sinking pellets, or algae-based foods in captivity.
Tank Mates:
Best housed with peaceful fish. Use caution in reef tanks, as it may consume sessile invertebrates like sponges or corals. Avoid predatory tank mates such as puffers or large Wrasses.
Aggression:
Non-aggressive, but opportunistic in its feeding.
Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced. Needs a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and stable, pristine water conditions.
