Spikey Thorn Antler Snail (Clithon diadema)
Overview:
The Spikey Thorn Antler Snail is a striking freshwater snail known for its unique shell covered in small horn-like spikes resembling antlers. With attractive striped or patterned shells and excellent algae-eating ability, this species is both decorative and highly beneficial for maintaining a clean aquarium.
Origin:
Native to Southeast Asia, Clithon diadema is commonly found in coastal streams, rivers, and brackish estuaries.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and micro-organisms growing on glass, rocks, plants, and décor. Supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach if natural algae is limited.
Tank / Setup Requirements:
-
Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons)
-
Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants for grazing surfaces
-
Stable water parameters recommended
-
A secure lid is beneficial as snails may occasionally explore above the waterline
Tank Mates:
Ideal for peaceful community aquariums. Compatible with most small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Avoid snail-eating fish such as puffers or large loaches.
Behaviour:
Peaceful and active algae grazer. Constantly moves across surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm. Like other nerite-type snails, they rarely reproduce in freshwater aquariums.
Experience Level:
Beginner friendly. Hardy and easy to care for, making them excellent additions to planted and aquascaped aquariums.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
-
pH: 6.5–8.0
-
Water Type: Freshwater
