Spotted Hogfish (Bodianus diana)

Overview

The Spotted Hogfish, also known as Diana’s Hogfish or Princess Hogfish, is a striking and active marine species featuring a vivid reddish-pink body adorned with white spots and a distinctive white patch near the tail. Its bold colors and lively swimming behavior make it a beautiful and engaging addition to larger marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Maldives and Indonesia—the Spotted Hogfish inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons, where it forages for small invertebrates among rocks and coral heads.

Feeding

A carnivorous feeder, the Spotted Hogfish enjoys a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped squid, and quality frozen or pellet preparations. Feeding two to three times daily will help maintain its health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Best kept with semi-aggressive or larger marine species such as Wrasses, tangs, triggers, and angelfish. It should not be housed with very small fish or ornamental crustaceans, as they may be viewed as prey.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive by nature, especially toward smaller or similar-looking fish. Providing ample space, rockwork, and hiding areas will reduce territorial behavior and allow it to settle comfortably.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. The Spotted Hogfish is hardy and adjusts well to aquarium life but requires a large, well-maintained tank (minimum 125 gallons) with stable water conditions.
