Staghorn Soft Coral (Sinularia sp.)
Overview:
The Staghorn Soft Coral is a hardy and attractive leather coral, named for its branching, staghorn-like growth form. Its finger-like projections sway beautifully in the current, adding natural movement and structure to reef aquariums. Available in shades of cream, tan, or green, it’s a popular choice for both beginner and experienced reef keepers.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, commonly found on reef flats and slopes where it thrives in moderate currents.
Feeding:
Primarily photosynthetic, sustained by symbiotic zooxanthellae. Can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding with phytoplankton, microplankton, or other coral foods.
Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and compatible with most peaceful fish and invertebrates. Should be placed with space around it, as larger colonies may release chemicals that affect nearby corals (chemical warfare).
Aggression:
Moderate. Does not sting but can compete chemically with other corals. Running activated carbon and maintaining good water flow helps reduce this effect.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Very hardy and tolerant of a range of conditions, making it an excellent soft coral for mixed reef tanks. Prefers moderate lighting, moderate to strong water flow, and stable parameters.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25.5°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
-
dKH: 8–12
