Temminckii Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus temminckii)

Overview

The Temminckii Bristlenose Pleco is a popular freshwater catfish known for its algae-eating abilities, distinctive bristles on the snout (especially in males), and peaceful, bottom-dwelling behavior. It is an excellent tank cleaner and a visually appealing addition to community aquariums.

Origin

Native to South America, particularly the Amazon Basin, inhabiting rivers, streams, and floodplain areas with submerged wood, rocks, and abundant plant matter.

Feeding

Omnivorous, with a preference for plant matter. Consumes algae, biofilm, vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and high-quality sinking pellets. Supplementing diet with occasional protein-rich foods supports growth and health.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and compatible with a wide range of community fish such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and rainbowfish. Avoid very aggressive or predatory species.

Aggression

Low. Territorial only with conspecifics when breeding. Prefers hiding spots and caves to establish territories.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, suitable for a variety of freshwater community setups.
