Two-Tone Wrasse (Halichoeres prosopeion)
Overview
The Two-Tone Wrasse is a small, peaceful reef fish renowned for its striking colorationâ€â€typically a vibrant green or turquoise body contrasted with a dark posterior, giving it its “two-tone†name. Active and graceful, it adds constant movement and subtle beauty to reef aquariums while helping control small invertebrate pests.
Origin
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia and the Philippines, Halichoeres prosopeion inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones, often hiding among crevices and rocks during the day.
Feeding
An omnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. It also grazes on live rock microfauna. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and coloration.
Tank Mates
Peaceful and reef-safe with most species, including gobies, anthias, tangs, and other non-aggressive Wrasses. Avoid overly aggressive or dominant tank mates.
Aggression
Generally peaceful and shy. Minimal territorial behavior, especially in well-structured aquariums with ample hiding spaces.
Experience Level
Ideal for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy and easy to maintain in mature, stable reef systems with a sand bed for burrowing.
