Variable Cory (Corydoras diphyes)

Overview

The Variable Cory is a small, peaceful, and attractive Corydoras species known for its silvery body with subtle variable markings along its flanks. Active, social, and hardy, it is ideal for community aquariums and planted setups, providing both movement and personality at the bottom of the tank.

Origin

Native to South America, particularly Paraguay and northern Argentina, inhabiting slow-moving rivers and streams with sandy or fine gravel substrates and abundant vegetation.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed:

• Sinking Cory pellets and wafers

• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia

• Occasional live micro-foods for conditioning

• High-quality micro sinking granules

Note: Sinking foods are preferred as Corydoras are bottom-dwelling foragers.

Tank Mates

Peaceful schooling fish suitable for community tanks:

• Small tetras, rasboras, and pencilfish

• Dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma, Rams)

• Rainbowfish and small livebearers

• Other Corydoras species

• Peaceful loaches

Avoid: Aggressive or very large species that may outcompete or intimidate them.

Aggression

Very low. Like all Corydoras, they thrive in groups of 6 or more, which encourages natural behavior and reduces stress.

Experience Level

Beginner to Intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, provided they have clean water, gentle flow, and a soft substrate.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

• pH: 6.0–7.5

• Hardness: 2–12 dGH

• Notes: Provide sand or fine gravel substrate, plants, and driftwood to create hiding spaces and mimic their natural habitat.
