Watchman Goby – Cryptocentrus pavoninoides

Overview:
The Watchman Goby is a burrow-dwelling goby admired for its alert “watchman” behavior and its potential to form symbiotic partnerships with pistol shrimp. With a subtly patterned body and vigilant nature, it adds both personality and function to the reef aquarium.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, often found along sandy bottoms near reefs where it guards the entrance of burrows.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality sinking pellets. Will also pick at microfauna in the sand.

Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and peaceful. Pairs well with other small community fish, corals, and inverts. May display mild territorial behavior toward other gobies.

Aggression:
Low to moderate. Peaceful with most tank mates but may defend its burrow from similar species.

Experience Level:
Beginner-friendly. Hardy and adaptable, especially when provided with a sand substrate and rockwork for shelter.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
