White Wizard Snail (Filopaludina martensi)

Overview

The White Wizard Snail is a striking freshwater snail prized for its pale ivory-to-cream shell and contrasting dark body. Known for its peaceful nature, hardiness, and algae-grazing abilities, it adds both utility and elegance to community aquariums.

Origin

Native to Southeast Asia, commonly found in slow-moving freshwater habitats such as ponds, marshes, and calm rivers with muddy or sandy bottoms.

Feeding

Primarily herbivorous. Eats soft algae, biofilm, and detritus. Supplement their diet with:

• Algae wafers

• Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini)

• Calcium-rich foods to support strong shell growth

Tank Mates

Extremely peaceful. Suitable for community setups with:

• Tetras, rasboras, danios

• Corydoras

• Shrimp

• Other non-aggressive snails and small fish

Avoid: Loaches, puffers, large cichlids, or any known snail predators.

Aggression

None. This species is completely peaceful and plant-safe, making it ideal for planted aquariums.

Experience Level

Perfect for beginners. Hardy, adaptable, and low-maintenance.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

• pH: 7.0–8.2 (alkaline preferred for shell health)

• Hardness: 6–20 dGH

• Notes: Provide calcium-rich water or supplements to prevent shell pitting or erosion. Soft substrates help protect their delicate foot.
