Yellow Forktail Pygmy Basslet (Assessor flavissimus)

Overview

The Yellow Forktail Pygmy Basslet is a peaceful and beautifully colored reef fish, displaying a brilliant golden-yellow body and graceful forked tail. Known for its calm nature and tendency to swim upside down under ledges, this species adds both charm and color to any marine aquarium.

Origin

Native to the Western Pacific Ocean, particularly around Papua New Guinea and Australia, this basslet inhabits reef caves and overhangs, often found hovering upside down in shaded areas.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed once or twice daily for best health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Very peaceful and reef-safe, making it an ideal addition to community and reef aquariums. It coexists well with gobies, clownfish, chromis, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with highly aggressive fish that may intimidate or outcompete it.

Aggression

Exceptionally peaceful, though it may become slightly territorial toward its own kind in small tanks. Can be kept singly or as a mated pair in larger aquariums with ample rockwork and hiding spaces.

Perfect for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, peaceful, and low-maintenance, the Yellow Forktail Pygmy Basslet adapts easily to captivity and is an excellent choice for both nano and reef aquariums.
