Barred Moray Eel – Echidna polyzona
Overview:
The Barred Moray Eel is a medium-sized, striking marine eel known for its distinctive black-and-white barred pattern along its elongated body. Its curious and active nature makes it an engaging species for large aquariums, often seen exploring crevices and rockwork.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, typically inhabiting coral reefs and rocky areas across Indonesia, the Philippines, and northern Australia.
Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on crustaceans, small fish, and other meaty marine foods. In captivity, provide frozen or live shrimp, small fish, and chopped seafood.
Tank Mates:
Compatible with larger, non-aggressive species. Avoid small fish or invertebrates that may be considered prey. Ideal for species-specific or carefully planned community tanks.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive/predatory – generally peaceful with larger tank mates but hunts smaller animals.
Experience Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with secure rockwork and hiding spaces.
