Chevron Tang – Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis

Overview:
The Chevron Tang is a striking, reef-safe tang known for its deep brown body adorned with bright yellow chevron-shaped markings and a yellow tail. Its peaceful nature and active grazing behavior make it a popular choice for algae control in reef aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Central Pacific, primarily around Hawaiian reefs, where it inhabits lagoons and outer reef slopes.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous – thrives on marine algae, seaweed, and spirulina-based foods, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Regular feeding helps maintain vibrant coloration and supports natural grazing behavior.

Tank Mates:
Ideal for peaceful community tanks. Can be kept with other tangs if the aquarium is large enough to reduce territorial behavior.

Aggression:
Mildly territorial – may defend its grazing areas, but generally peaceful with other non-aggressive species.

Experience Level:
Intermediate aquarists – requires a stable, mature aquarium with ample swimming space and plenty of algae or prepared herbivore foods.

Water Parameters:

• Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

• pH: 8.1–8.4

• Salinity: 1.020–1.025

• Minimum Tank Size: 100+ gallons

The Chevron Tang is a peaceful, active algae grazer, perfect for reef aquariums where a visually striking and functional herbivore is desired.
