Description:
The Dwarf Bengal Snakehead (Channa punctata) is a relatively small but fierce snakehead species, reaching a maximum size of around 35 cm. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is known for its vibrant coloration and hardy nature. While considered moderately aggressive for a Channa, it can still be highly territorial, especially in confined spaces.
Depending on its regional origin, this species may require a seasonal drop in water temperature to replicate its natural habitat and encourage healthy behavior and possible breeding.
Aquarium Requirements:
A large, well-filtered tank with a secure, tight-fitting lid is crucial, as these fish are capable jumpers. They thrive in aquariums that offer ample hiding spots and low to moderate flow. Floating vegetation and dim lighting can help replicate their natural environment. As obligate air breathers, they require access to the water surface for atmospheric oxygen.
Feeding:
Channa punctata is a carnivorous predator with a strong preference for live foods. In the wild, they feed on smaller fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, their diet should include live fish (sparingly and with caution), earthworms, frogs, crickets, and insects. They can also adapt to frozen meaty foods and high-quality carnivore pellets over time.
Note: Avoid feeding wild-caught feeders due to the risk of parasites or disease. Gut-loaded insects and varied protein sources will promote coloration and growth.
