Windelov Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov')

Overview

The Windelov Java Fern is a unique, decorative aquarium plant known for its finely branched, lace-like leaf tips. Hardy, slow-growing, and highly adaptable, it adds beautiful texture to aquascapes without demanding special care—perfect for beginners and planted-tank enthusiasts.

Origin

Originates from Southeast Asia, typically found attached to rocks, roots, and driftwood along shaded riverbanks and streams.

Lighting & Placement

• Light: Low to medium

• Placement: Midground to background

• Notes: Must be attached to hardscape (wood or rock). Burying the rhizome will cause rot.

Feeding

Low nutrient requirements, but growth improves with:

• Liquid fertilizers

• CO₂ optional (helps, but not required)

Tank Mates

Great for community tanks. Suitable with:

• Peaceful fish

• Shrimp and snails

• Many cichlids (including those that may uproot or eat softer plants)

The tough leaves are often ignored by plant-nipping species.

Aggression

None—fully peaceful plant.

Experience Level

Beginner friendly. Very hardy and tolerant of a broad range of water conditions.

• Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)

• pH: 6.0–7.8

• Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

• Extras: Thrives in low-tech tanks and tolerates low light very well.
