Bihar Staurogyne Plant (Staurogyne sp. “Bihar”)

Overview

The Bihar Staurogyne is a rare and attractive variant of the Staurogyne genus, known for its elongated, serrated, and slightly wavy leaves that give it a unique and wild appearance compared to the broader-leaved Staurogyne repens. It originates from India and is gaining popularity among aquascapers for its hardy nature and distinctive texture.

This plant works beautifully as a midground filler or foreground bush when regularly trimmed.

Origin

Native to the Bihar region of India, though exact species classification remains unclear—thus named Staurogyne sp. “Bihar”.

Lighting & Placement

• Light: Moderate to high

• Placement: Foreground (trimmed low) or midground (left taller)

• Growth Form: Upright stems that branch readily with trimming

Higher light intensifies leaf structure and helps maintain compact growth.

Feeding

• Prefers nutrient-rich substrate

• Benefits from root tabs and liquid fertilizers

• CO₂ optional but strongly enhances growth speed and bushiness

Tank Mates

Excellent for peaceful planted communities:

• Tetras, rasboras, danios

• Corydoras and dwarf catfish

• Dwarf cichlids

• Shrimp and snails

Avoid large digging fish or plant-eating species.

Aggression

Zero—completely peaceful plant.

Experience Level

Beginner–intermediate: hardy and adaptable, but looks best with stable lighting and nutrients.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

• pH: 6.0–7.5

• Hardness: Soft to medium

• Notes: Frequent trimming encourages denser, bushier clusters.
